Easy to say. Sometimes incredibly hard to make happen.
In this time of pink love hearts and red roses, it can be all about couples, or other people, or feeling like something is missing. It can go the other way too, a more defensive route, with every lifestyle blogger worth their salt proclaims damnation to anyone who doesn’t worship the ground you walk on.
I don’t think loving yourself means ignoring flaws. I think loving yourself has a lot to do with how you approach your short comings. Loving yourself to me means noticing those flaws, acknowledging them, then being able to process whether or not you accept them, or adjust accordingly to improve. This is also true in any relationship. You can take a step back and notice when you’re the one in the wrong. It says a lot about maturity and confidence when you can admit to your own mistakes. I don’t think loving yourself is reliant on another person, or lack thereof. You can still love yourself and love someone else and as the saying goes, you cannot pour from an empty cup.
In terms of personal developement, loving yourself is about setting goals and taking action to acheive them. I think it also means taking care of your body, feeding it well, treating it kindly with body butter and nice shampoo, and moving it daily to have fun. It’s good to have challenges, but don’t push yourself to breaking point with unrealistic expectations. This is something I struggle with as I rarely allow myself to make mistakes. But I try to remind myself that self-care and self-love is not about perfection. It’s about happiness and feeling content.
I think the most important definition of loving yourself is how you talk to yourself on a day-to-day basis. I’m doing ok. I’m working well today. I’ve been trying hard. I love to dance. I love to read cookery books. Today has been tough so I’m going to make a hot chocolate. When it comes to loving yourself, it’s the voice in your head that you need to listen to. You decide what they are going to say. And if that voice is screaming at you or being hurtful, then I suggest a few choice words are in order. And a bubble bath.
